St. Paul Saints (1995-2002), Northern League, independent
A Minnesota celebrity because of his Twins experience and his long baseball career, Twig helped bring credibility to the
new independent Northern League St. Paul Saints (go to their site), established in 1993 and at the time known mostly for zany promotions.
He was first-base coach under managers Marty Scott (1995-2000), Doug Sisson (2001), and Jimmy Johnson (2002).
Players included future major leaguers J.D. Drew and Scott Stewart and veterans Darryl Strawberry, Jack Morris, Matt Nokes, Glenn Davis, Billy Ashley and others.
Besides coaching, Twig was an ambassador for baseball in the community. At the end of the 2002 season, the Saints retired his #5 and named their MVP award for him.
Since he was headed for Texas, they gave him cowboy boots, a 10-gallon hat and an engraved belt buckle. The day of his final game was designated Wayne Terwilliger Day in St. Paul. They also created
