Texas Rangers (1972 and 1981-85)

Twig and Nellie Fox In 1972 owner Bob Short's Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers. Twig made the move as part of Ted Williams' coaching staff. (He's at right with good friend Nellie Fox.) After a disappointing season, Ted retired again and Twig went back to managing in the minors.

In 1981, Don Zimmer became the Rangers' new manager and Twig became his third-base coach. Zimmer was "the best manager I worked for," a positive person who gave the sense that he had things under control and that everything was going to work out, Twig says. But everything didn't, and after a disastrous start of the 1982 season, Zimmer was fired.

From then through 1985, Twig also coached for managers Darrell Johnson, Doug Rader and Bobby Valentine
